Craft hobbyist opens own bead store

By PAMELA SROKA-HOLZMANN

As one of Central Jersey's largest suppliers for creating jewelry, Extraordinary Beads owner Linda Johnson said her customers enjoy creating personalized gifts for loved ones.

The store, which opened about six years ago, offers a growing selection of beads, including:
Swarovski crystal from Austria
Seed beads from Japan
Glass beads from Venice and the Czech Republic
Gemstone, glass and potter beads.

The store has gold and silver wire for wire working, as well as precious metal clay and
"kumihimo'' fiber weaving supplies, jewelry findings, tools, books and magazines.

Prior to opening the store, Johnson of Tewksbury said she would travel throughout the state in search of a quality bead shop with minimal luck. She then retired after 30 years of working in the telecommunications field and decided to open her own bead store.

"I was looking to do something different,'' Johnson said. "I have craft genes. I have always been driven to make things. I said, ‘Someone should open a bead store around here,' and that's when the light bulb went off.''

While the store mainly focuses on "make-you-own'' jewelry selections, Johnson said there are some completed, handmade jewelry items available for purchase.

The store also hosts children's birthday parties, repairs jewelry and offers adult beading classes at 6:30 p.m. on various weekdays, as well as weekends.
